DJ RALPH von RICHTHOVEN

| German

Since 1977 I work as a DJ in German clubs every weekend. I have started DJing as a black-music-dj in small downtown-clubs; then later I worked in some real big places with massive audience every night for many years.

Now during the week I work as a music-journalist for “Funkhaus Europa”, a German radio station that features “global beats” 24 hours a day. Nevertheless, every weekend I am behind the wheels of steel in certain clubs and venues, as a black-music or global-beat DJ.

So called "mainstream-music" has always been rather boring for me, since I look for “different stuff”. I`m always interested in good music that I am yet to know, as long as it has “soul”; no matter it`s on vinyl, CD or hard-disc. In the 70`s I used to work with vinyl, like everybody else; nowadays I use a laptop-pc like everyone does.

I am specialized in music styles like: brazil-house, latin-minimal, afro-tech-house, brazilectro, asian-underground, oriental-house, chicano-hiphop, dub-reggae, balkan-techno, french-house, deep-house, blues-house and brasil-drum´n´bass.

Since 2004 I also work for the record label Lola`s World as a compiler.

My artistname “dj.ralph.von.richthoven” is not my own idea. I got this nickname in the early 70‘s, working as studio producer for different black hiphop & reggae-artists in northern Germany. Those guys called me “red baron”, because I had a red bike, a pilot jacket and old fashioned glasses. In Germany everybody knows that the world war-1 pilot Von Richthofen was a fascist, but for Americans and Jamaicans “the red baron” is nothing but a peanuts-comic-figure: the idol of Snoopy, a famous pilot. These black guys never understood, why I didn´t like this nickname, and they never stopped playing this game with me. In the late 70‘s it was suddenly necessary for German DJs to have some kind of artist name: I´ve chosen the name, anyway everybody in town calls me: “von” richthoven.
